A cross-section, not a photograph
A retinal photograph shows the surface. An OCT cuts through it, resolving the individual layers in a slice a few microns thick.
That means fluid where there should be none is not a judgement call — it is visible, and measurable in microns.
Why we repeat it
A single scan says what the retina looks like today. A series says which way it is going, and that is what treatment intervals are set against.
This is why missing appointments matters more than patients expect.
