Why corneas are different
Most transplants need close tissue matching because the immune system reaches the graft through the bloodstream. The cornea has no blood vessels, so it is partly shielded from that.
It is the reason corneal grafts succeed at rates other transplants cannot approach.
What sets your date
Tissue is allocated through the eye bank, and that allocation is what fixes the surgery date rather than our theatre list.
We give as much notice as we can, but some flexibility is needed.
