What to ask at your consultation

The questions worth asking at a surgical consultation — including the ones people wish they had.

About the operation

Who performs it. How many they do a year. What happens if something is found mid-procedure. What the realistic best and worst outcomes are, not just the average.

About afterwards

How long until you can drive, work, lift, swim. Who you call at 2am. What symptoms mean go to hospital rather than wait.

Ask who will be holding the instruments. You are entitled to a straight answer.
